Hey friend! If you’ve been hanging around my corner of the internet for a minute, you know I love keeping things real, getting a little silly, and pointing us both back to the truth of God’s Word. Today, we need to have a little chat about a title you’re going to start seeing around here more often: Faith-Based Mental Health Coach.
First things first—total honesty hour: I am currently in school to become a certified Faith-Based Mental Health Coach through Light University (who is partnered with the American Association of Christian Counselors). I haven’t graduated yet! I’m knee-deep in textbooks, study notes, and coffee, learning exactly how to best serve you down the road.
But you might be wondering, “Dalyce, what even is that? Is it just a fancy church term for a therapist?”
Not quite! Let’s break down exactly what a coach does, how it is completely different from counseling, and the kind of person I am praying to walk alongside.
The Big Breakdown: Coach vs. Counselor
It is a super common misconception that coaching is just a “watered-down” version of therapy. News flash: Coaching is NOT a diluted form of counseling. They are two entirely different tools designed for different seasons of life.
Here is a handy little cheat sheet to show you how they differ:
| Feature | Counseling / Therapy | Mental Health Coaching |
| The Core Motivation | Driven by a need to heal from pain or distress. | Driven by a desire to reach your full potential. |
| The Time-Frame | Focuses heavily on processing the past. | Focuses on moving forward into the future. |
| The Primary Focus | Solving deep-rooted problems and treating clinical disorders. | Discovering possibilities, options, and strengths. |
| Qualifications | Requires a mental health degree, clinical licensing, and state regulations. | Focuses on specialized training, skills, and a biblical worldview to partner with clients on growth goals. |
Think of it this way: If you are struggling with a clinical mental health disorder or are deeply weighed down by past trauma, a licensed counselor is the professional you need to help you heal.
But if you are standing in the present, looking at the gap between where you are and where you want to go, a coach is the partner who steps in to help you bridge that gap.
What I Do as a Coach (Once those final exams are done!)
When we sit down together, my goal isn’t to diagnose you or fix you. My goal is to partner with you. Together, we will:
- Maximize your God-given strengths: We’ll look at your natural talents, personality, and the unique passions God put in your heart.
- Call out the sneaky stuff: I’ll help you spot and gently kick to the curb any self-sabotaging mindsets that are keeping you stuck.
- Ask the hard questions: I like to pose powerful, open-ended questions that make you stop, think, and look at things from a fresh perspective.
- Keep it real and accountable: We’ll brainstorm real, practical action steps, and I will lovingly hold you to them.
- Filter it all through a Biblical Worldview: We will look at your life through the truth of Scripture, remembering that “the Lord is the one who goes ahead of you. He will be with you; He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NLT).
Who Am I Looking For?
Let’s talk about you. Because my ultimate goal on this blog and in my future coaching practice is to make sure you know you are not alone in your struggles.
I am looking for clients who say:
“I love God, I’m trying my best, but I feel stuck. I don’t need a clinical diagnosis, but I desperately need an environment where I feel safe, comfortable, and completely at ease to figure out my next steps. I want to stop sabotaging myself, identify my strengths, and build a future that honors the passions God gave me.”
If you are motivated by growth, ready to explore new possibilities, and looking for a sister in Christ to look you in the eye and say, “Hey, this is hard, but we can do this with God’s help,” then you are exactly the kind of person I am doing all this homework for.
Stay tuned as I finish up this crazy educational journey! In the meantime, look around the blog, grab a cup of coffee, and remember—your past doesn’t define your future, and God isn’t done with you yet.
